WhizQuiz© is a Web-based quizzing system developed by the ISIS computing group of Virginia Tech. Students need a way to test whether or not they really learned what they were supposed to learn before they find out on the exam. WhizQuiz© allows instructors to create quizzes that are automatically graded and deliver feedback. WhizQuiz© is designed to make it easy to point quiz takers to information on the web (or off) that will help them understand a problem or subject area better. We feel that WhizQuiz© is superior in both its educational aspects and delivery features to other quizzing systems available. Here are some of those features highlighted:
- Customizable, flexible, corrective feedback. This means the ability not only to respond differently to right and wrong answers, but also to tell the student why what he selected was the wrong answer, for each of the possible wrong answers.
- Questions, answer choices, and feedback can include HTML so a URL or an image could be used as part of the feedback.
- Images can be included with the question and the answer choices.
- The ability to embed both JavaScript and HTML allows WhizQuiz© to be used in conjunction with other programs for customized security systems or, for example, so that complex math equations and matrices can be used in the quiz.
- WhizQuiz© can use a variety of question types including True/False, numeric entries, and multiple choice.
- Any number of questions can be displayed per page. Quiz takers can review all their answers before submitting, just by using the scroll bar. We believe that our design of having more than one question per page in both the actual and graded quiz allows for greater readability and greater ease in navigation.
- WhizQuiz© is implemented using server-side CGI programs. It generates only standard HTML and works with almost any browser. This greatly reduces the chance that taking the quiz will cause the users browser to crash, display an error, or freeze from an incompatibility with JavaScript.
- WhizQuiz© runs and is administered on a UNIX server, but quiz authors and quiz takers can use their platform of choice since quizzes are submitted and taken through the Web.
